CORE™ Omni Directional Technology & Polarization Diversity
A limiting factor in today's MIMO performance is when signals are arriving from similar directions. In a single-user MIMO systems, it has been established that correlation of the signals from different transmit antennas reduces the overall capacity. In other words, the best capacity can be achieved if (in the uplink case) the signals at the base station antennas are uncorrelated. Unfortunately, such de-correlation requires a larger spacing of the base station antennas, this is an obvious problems of form factor.
These problems can be greatly mitigated by using antennas with different polarizations. For example, a wave transmitted by a vertical dipole antenna is vertically polarized, while a signal emitted by a loop antenna in the horizontal plane is horizontally polarized. It is also important to note that waves with orthogonal polarizations (like vertical and horizontal polarization) can carry different signals, and also their fading is statistically independent. So, instead of using two spatially separated antennas at TX and RX, we can use two antennas with orthogonal polarizations. This solves the two problems previously mentioned: because the two antennas can be co-located, the resulting form factor is small. Furthermore, the signals at the two base station antennas (again assuming uplink) are uncorrelated (despite the fact that the antennas are co-located), so that “polarization multiplexing” (i.e., transmitting different data streams on different polarizations) exhibits a high capacity.
